So where did I start?
It can be overwhelming to try to recreate your wardrobe. Not only that, but if not planned correctly, very expensive. So these were my 6 steps to pursuing a new wardrobe.

Go SHOPPING!!! ποΈ
1.) Research
Before going off and buying things, or throwing clothes out, I decided to start off with some research. Wikipedia says that a capsule wardrobe "is a small collection of clothes that can be put together in different ways and includes everything one would normally need to wear. The aim is to have an outfit suitable for any occasion without owning excessive items of clothing." Cool, well now what. How do you know what those items are? I needed a bit of assistance from my dear friendβ¦YouTube. I started looking up capsule wardrobes, and let me tell you, there's so many thoughts and opinions to how one should go about this.
2.) Define
This is key to narrowing down what look you are going for. As I mentioned in my previous blog, now that I'm in my 30's I realized that I wanted mature my look. I knew that I was going for a "classy, timeless look with a hint of trend". I ended up finding Nina Lea Caine on YouTube and I just KNEW this was for me. If you want to check her out, check the video below.
3.) Create a Pinterest Board.
To all my fellow lovers of Pinterest, this was probably my favorite part of creating my capsule. I started with shoes, moved to bottoms, tops, layers, accessories and then ways to combine them. The thing you want to look for your colors and the basics, and accessories. You can also incorporate statement pieces. These would be items that maybe had patterns or a bit more bold colors
My colors were
White
Black
Grey
Cream
Tans
For the my Basics
Tanks
T-shirts
Long Sleeves
Jeans
Trousers
Layers
Shoes
Accessories
Jewelry
Bags/Purses
After I had a solid plan, I looked at ways to piece them together. Here's screenshot of some of the items I pinned. If you want to see the rest of the items viist this link at the bottom of the page.
4.) Create a monthly budget.
Once you figured everything out the hardest part is trying not to buy everything all at once. If you got money like that, by all means go for it. Figure out how much you want to spend a month and go from there.
5.) Get rid of the clothes
It's time to bring out your inner Marie Kondo. Create four piles of where your clothing pieces will go.
Yes - These are your "can't live without" pieces
Yeah no - These are the pieces that either a.) don't fit anymore, or b.) you without a doubt know you don't like.
Hmmm - These are the ones the "holding in your hands as you question what pile to put it in for 5 minutes". You don't have to get rid of these pieces right away. Put them away for now and revisit in a month.
Seasonal/Special Occasions - For all your formal gatherings, weddings, galas, statement pieces.
Get rid of the ones you know you don't want anymore and get excited to welcome the new.
6.) Buy items
My budget allowed me to buy monthly. I started off by buying in bulk the t-shirts I would wear year round. I got three of each color; white, cream, grey and black. That was it for the first month.
From there, whenever I'd find a good sale I'd make sure to get the items I need within my budget. I also became a thrifter and let me tell you, I have found some of my favorite pieces at Goodwill (thank you person who donated!)
Final Statements
It doesn't have to be super complicated. This is the way that worked best for me. I'm still working on building my closet and I started this about five months ago. If it's stressing you out, pause and revisit in a month. You don't have to get it all at once. Enjoy the process!
